Dear Amateur Radio Friends,

I am one of the initiators of a new technology group of radio amateurs in
Germany who have set themselves the goal of investigating the best of all
possible technologies and their combinations in order to generate the best
codec for low bitrate transmissions.

Thereby we want to investigate the sources as well as the channel coding.

The group is supported by the DARC (Deutscher Amateur Radio Club).

We already have support from two other college professors who want to help.

My name is Michael Schwenkert (Mike, DL2MHB), I am a retired technical
physics engineer working with another young electrical and communications
engineer, Felix, DD8SF, (leader of the group). In October, the group should
start officially and involve other radio amateurs. I try to keep myself
fresh in my spare time besides amateur radio with studies in theoretical
physics and mathematics.

Our goal is well below that of 6 kbit/s data rate with excellent speech
intelligibility. We are striving to build a robust system for VHF/UHF that
is suitable for everyday use and will also try our hand at digital voice
transmission over HF. We are in contact with the developers of M17. The most
common codecs, like OPUS or Codec2, from David Rowe, are widely known to us.

In short, we are aware that we have to build our own source coding based on
AI methods like CNN or also compressive sensing or both. As FEC we currently
foresee a proprietary development of LDPC.

It looks like we will have to dig very deep into the trick box of physics,
mathematics and communications engineering.

One of our current benchmarks is facebook with encodec.

(My personal opinion: It is a revolution...)

We would be very happy to share ideas with our friends in the U.S. who may
have similar goals.

Our future community is of course free and does not serve any commercial
purposes. Everything shown and developed will be open source.

Is there a part of your group that deals with the same or similar topics?

Is there interest in any kind of cooperation?

Thank you very much for an answer to my questions.

Physics is mathematical, not because we know so much about the physical
world, but because we know so little: it is only its mathematical properties
that we can discover.
