Greetings all,

I have updates on ORI's participation in standards working groups at IEEE, and working groups for FCC TAC.

So far Matthew Wishek, Anshul Makkar, Andreas Schwarzinger, (and presumably Leondard Dieguez) are interested in tracking/participating in an IEEE drone standards working group.

We received the invitation and we have communicated our interest.

I will publicize any information I receive, but if you are interested in participating directly or in supporting those of us that are, please let me know?

I'm looking forward to this work - there's quite a bit of good stuff in the summary and the vision for the standard plays to our strengths at ORI.

It will be a positive force to have a strong open source and open protocol voice in this working group, especially due to the use of microwave amateur bands for advanced drone work.

For more information on the working group we were invited to join please see

https://standards.ieee.org/ieee/1954/10686/

In other working group news, ORI's term on FCC's Technological Advisory Council starts this week. We will be participating in the 6G and Advanced Spectrum Sharing working groups. We will be looking out for any threat to amateur radio (VHF and above) along with speaking up for open protocols, open standards, and quality open source work.

We can nominate additional representatives to the FCC TAC, and this would be a great time to step up. If you have time for weekly meetings and the writing of recommendations for the FCC on behalf of our community, please get in touch. The term runs through September 2025, with a final meeting expected in DC in December 2025. You will be vetted by the FCC, who will be looking for conflicts of interest and appearances of impropriety. You will be expected to understand and follow FACA rules.

https://www.gsa.gov/policy-regulations/policy/federal-advisory-committee-management/advice-and-guidance/faca-brochure

The vetting process is positive and relatively painless. FACA rules are not overly burdensome.

The US government values the opinions of the TAC, our service last term was deeply appreciated, and we made a material difference for open source and the amateur radio service. Weekly meetings are virtual, last about an hour, and the job requires some additional time outside of meetings to contribute to the work products of that working group.

Thank you to all who make it possible for this work to continue to grow and expand. We couldn't do these sorts of things without your broad and continuing support.

-Michelle Thompson
CEO ORI
858 229 3399

On Fri, Mar 29, 2024 at 9:50 AM Michelle Thompson <mountain.michelle@gmail.com> wrote:

This is probably related to recent activity in #neptune, but we were invited to join a standards effort at IEEE.
