CERN, among others, made a significant investment into bringing KiCAD up to speed. We are reaching the breakpoint at which it becomes a suitable replacement for proprietary tools. Whether that is the current release, the next, or one after is dependent on your application. I suggest that you give it a thorough evaluation.
